At some churches, you dress up in your best clothes on a Sunday morning, maybe to show reverence for God; at some churches you are at your most casual, maybe to show God’s grace to us in taking us as we are.
At West, our apparel tradition is that at Advent, we all come to church dressed in the colour of that day, as a visual reminder of the different things we look forward to in the story of Jesus moving into the neighbourhood.
There are lots of different colour-traditions around the Christian world, but here’s what we do:
- on the first Sunday in Advent (29 Nov this year) we dress in green for hope
- on the second Sunday in Advent (6 Dec this year) we dress in blue for peace
- on the third Sunday in Advent (13 Dec this year) we dress in yellow for joy
- on the fourth Sunday in Advent (20 Dec this year) we dress in red for love.
I know five-year-old Thomas has been planning his Advent wardrobe for a while. I’m looking forward to seeing him, and all of you, in a sea of green this Sunday.
