Unplug and Plug In: One More Reason

March 15th, 2010 by Thalia Kehoe Rowden

One of the best things about unplugging from screens is that you can enjoy listening to great stuff while doing something else fun or productive.  I am in love with Radio New Zealand, and get heaps of their programmes as podcasts that I can listen to whenever I’m doing dishes or folding clothes or whatever.

Last Friday, Kathryn Ryan interviewed the fascinating actor Geena Davis (Thelma and Louise, Commander in Chief), who has set up a research foundation looking at how Hollywood portrays men and women.  Her research institute has found, among other things that:

  • Only 27% of speaking characters in the biggest-selling movies are women (and only 28% in G-rated movies)
  • Female characters in G-rated movies are more likely to be wearing ‘sexually revealing clothing’ than female characters in R-rated movies. Incredible!

You can listen to the full interview here, or subscribe for podcasts (it’s easy!) here.

It seems to me that this is one more reason to have a thoughtful balance in our lives of screen-based entertainment, with all its oddities and imbalances, and real life plugging in.  What do you think?
