I Choose

January 22nd, 2010 by Thalia Kehoe Rowden

I’ve gone through a couple of 24 phases in my life, where my heart has raced along with Jack Bauer’s as he strives to save humanity (or at least America) from the latest terrorist threat.

Last time I watched it, something Jack kept saying annoyed me every time.  When faced with a moral dilemma (to torture or not to torture, say), he would shout, as if it won the argument, ‘We don’t have a choice!’

Sorry, Jack, but we always have choices.  No one can make us do anything, really.  Even at gunpoint we have choices – just ask the martyrs down the centuries who went to the stake or scaffold rather than compromise their partnership with Jesus.

On Sunday, Liane and the kids led us in an ambitious prayer that revealed the daily choices we make to embrace or reject the way of Jesus, to be led by the Holy Spirit or by our own convenience.  If it helped you to commit aloud to the way of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, then feel free to download a copy of Max Lucado’s prayer, I choose.
