West on Facebook

January 17th, 2010 by Thalia Kehoe Rowden

Facebook is one of my favourite parts of the interwebs.  I am much more, and much more meaningfully, in touch with friends and family who don’t live in Newpie than I would be without its helping hand.

And it’s not just friends out of town.  Since I set up a ‘West’ list on my fb homepage, I feel a lot better connected to people in our lovely church, too.  I get to see and comment on your family photos, your conversations about your gardens, grandchildren, exams and excursions.

And thanks to Nathaniel’s initiative, facebook has just got better for West.  You don’t even have to be a fb member to check out our group page that he’s set up, and already, it’s been enriching our community connections (for the 33 West folk who are on facebook so far, and now for everyone else, too!).

Click on the ‘Wall’ and see the kinds of things we’ve been casually chatting about, and how useful it’s been to share things like a link to the tv news article on West friend Mark Grantham the other week.

I’m keen to hear what you think of this when you’ve had a try. If you’re not a facebook member, ask someone who is to give you a sales pitch on it, and give you tips to allay any concerns about security or difficulty or time-wastage (I steer clear of all the games on facebook to make sure it’s not a bottomless pit).

Facebook isn’t a substitute for flesh-and-blood community, but in my experience, it sure helps it.
