a tale of two texts

November 27th, 2009 by Thalia Kehoe Rowden

Last Sunday was a bit unusual at West.  It was our annual Year in P/Review service, and the open mic was nice and busy – some of the people who spoke have added their comments onto the post below, so check them out.

But at 11.30 I decided we’d all been sitting down a bit long for me to jump up and preach, so I decided to post my sermon here instead.  I’ve done so, but with trembling knees – cos it wasn’t written to be read, but to be spoken, and I’m a little anxious about the difference.

So I hope you’ll read it with generosity, knowing you’re getting my manuscript, which is not the same thing as hearing me in person.  I’ve even kept it in the writing-on-the-page format I write in for sermons, to make that clear.

As for this week, well, it’s Advent!  Hurrah!  Come to church wearing green for hope, and if you’d like to, you could read Isaiah 40:1-5 before you come, which is the text I’ll be preaching on.  I’m looking forward to it (and this time we’ll make sure there’s time for me to preach it rather than post it online!).  See you there!

And here’s the sermon-that-wasn’t-preached: a mountain, some fireworks and a cup of tea
