The year in preview: how will 2010 go?

hopes/plans/dreams/prayers/priorities/ changes/questions/growing/learning/settling

Today in our annual year in p/review service a good few people had the opportunity to share their highlights and lowlights of 2009 and their hopes for 2010, but time ran out before we had heard from everyone.  This post is a chance to hear from everyone, with no time constraints.

If you spoke today, please put in a comment with what you said so those who weren’t there can hear. And if you didn’t speak today, please add a comment to tell us how things have been with you and what you hope for next year.  This is really important!  Looking forward to hearing from you!

This morning, after every reflection on 2009, the contributor finished by saying ‘that was my year’ and we responded with ‘thanks be to God’.  When we got to the 2010 hopes, the contributor finished with ‘these are my hopes’ and we answered ‘God, please guide us’.  Maybe as you read, you can say those things to yourselves or add them to your comment.

I was quite moved by people’s honesty. It was neat to hear the positive things and also a wake up call to hear some of the realities that others have had to face. Puts my own trials into perspective.

What a whirlwind year. Lots of “highs” and a few lows. The birth of our third (and last) child, Madison on the back seat of the car would be top of the high list (I was only mildly freaking out at the time). We are thankful to God for blessing us with another healthy daughter. If she is as active as her older sisters, life will become a little more busy. On that note for me it is a struggle at times to spend “quiet” time with God. Maybe instead of getting up at 6.30am each morning I just need to get up at 6am. Not that I am one for sleaping in, but sometimes it’s hard to get the eyes open. Our Church family group is fantastic and thanks goes to each member and esp James and Carol our group leaders. Matt and Thalia tying the knot – so cool to have you both back home.
Some of the more difficult times of the year have been watching Margaret (Mother in Law) go through Chemo for cancer. A sharp reminder on how fragile our life and health can be. The passing of Allan Sayer. He was cool guy and I enjoyed talking and cracking jokes with him.
Anyway I need to get back to work so some more thoughts later.

    Highlights for 2009… Matt’s proposal & Thalia & Matt’s Wedding… (all 3 of them 🙂 )
Lowlights… far too many!! Personal lows can be cruel… Cancer being one of the main problems with loved ones & friends.
Events… attending our very first Tangi at Parihaka – a very sad, but “mind blowing” experience. A Remembrance Service at
St.Mary’s – another sad but new experience.
Relationships… “Rainbow Ladies” – NOT Rainbow Ladies, just meeting each week with Heather H. to do a study of her choice
& making sure we “keep in touch” with her since it is no longer that easy for her to attend our Sunday Services.
Growing & Learning… growth for me, doesn’t always show until after an event or low! Jabez Prayer certainly “widened my territory” on several occasions… Speaking at a funeral service is not something I would choose to do, but not wanting to let my friend down “I did it”.
Settling… hmmmm still trying too 🙂

    Year 2010 in P/view…
Hopes… for better health for loved ones & friends
Plans… Gary & my visit to the South Is. which was postponed this year. Both our Dads were born down there & it is our plan to visit their birthplace. Visit with some of my relatives & also visit the family Marae at Karitane. I should of learnt the Maori language when I was younger.
Dreams/Prayers… Jabez Prayer was a simple prayer – we don’t need to pray a lot of words – God doesn’t mind short simple
prayers He just would like us to “talk” with Him regularly.
Priorities/Changes… spending more time with Gary
Questions… NEVER be afraid to ask them. Discovering the fear is not in the asking but more in the reply we think we may get.
Learning… There has to be a lesson in “why” some things happen – maybe I will discover that in 2010
Settling… accepting “what will be, will be” – an expression I’ve learnt from my mentor & friend!!

There are many things to be thankful for about West and the people involved in the life of the church.
Regarding the year of 2010 in preview I raised the concerns that Carol and I have for the involvement of our two older kids – Michael (12-13) and Rachael (10 -11). I recalled the relatively strong group of kids we have had over the past 5-6 years, however we now perceive a lull in the number of kids of intermediate age – end of school. Most of our older kids are seniors this year and many will not be around in 2010.
In terms of kids within our regular ranks there is a group of 4 boys aged 13. Then there is Rachael who will turn 11 next year.
So given these logistics I raised our concerns about what we can offer our youth in 2010…
I did not offer any solutions, just identified the dilema as we see it.
