a tale of two texts

November 20th, 2009 by Thalia Kehoe Rowden

I really enjoyed being back at the lectern last Sunday.  (I hope I wasn’t the only one!)  It was a great feeling to read from one of my favourite parts of the Bible, Romans 12 and try to help us all to be better equipped to support each other in times of lament.

I’d be really interested to hear how you have found listening and being listened to this week, in light of our discussion on Sunday.  What has been helpful?  What other ideas can you contribute?

How about you reflect on your experiences with our whole community on our blog?  (If you’re concerned about privacy, you can sign yourself with just your first name, initials or some other way we’ll know who you are, but so the whole world won’t know it’s you.)

To remind you, my six best tips for skilled listening are:

1.  It’s all about them (so choose to be silent and focus on what they’re saying)
2.  Be a listener, not a journalist (so ask general, open questions to show you’re available to listen, not specific ones to get all the goss)
3.  You’re not Bob the Builder (so it’s about listening, not fixing)
4.  Silence is golden (so let your friend think and feel in silence without jumping in)
5.  Keep your friend in the driver’s seat (so let them decide what you’re talking about; don’t interrupt or tell them how their story reminds you of your story)
6.  Don’t look for silver linings or simple answers (there might not be any, and having you listen well will make more difference than anything you could say or suggest)

What are your best tips?  What has worked well for you?  Is this important?

And as for this week’s text – check out the year in p/review post.

It IS GREAT to have you back in the lecturn Thalia…….Lamentations isn’t a familier section so I’m looking forward to hearing more – I will need to catch up as I’ve missed the last two!! It would do me good to read it myself…….or listen to it from the tapes……

Hi Robyn – if you want to listen online (best if you have broadband) you can click on the Sermons button above and then select the ones you want to listen to.

we are on broadband & I have listened online several times in the past…..I mean’t “listen to the cd’s, (you know the Bible ones)………. I should of done what Jocelyn D did & that was start at the beginning & work my way thru’. Perhaps that could be my “New Year” resolution 🙂 & also pray for a good “memory” so that I would remember what I’ve read & heard 🙂
    have a great day………

Having a bad memory isn’t so bad – if you listen to one of the CDs and really like it, you can listen again later and enjoy it all over again 🙂
