Groups
As well as Sunday morning stuff, a few groups meet regularly throughout the year, and some meet for a set period to spend time on something particular, like discussing a book or preparing for baptism.
In 2010, the following groups are planned to start or restart in February and March:
- Our movie and discussion group will meet again on Tuesday nights. The movies are chosen to explore themes in the preaching series that’s running at the same time, so Slumdog Millionaire screened during our month of prayer and self-denial for tranzsend (the Baptist overseas Missionary Society), and Elizabeth: The Golden Age screened when we were discussing singleness on Sundays. The group watches half a movie each week and discusses it over supper.
- Two Bible study groups meet fortnightly, one on Tuesday afternoons, the other on Thursday evenings.
- A new group will be starting up in March for 16 weeks, exploring some of the basics of Christian life. This will be a great group for people who are new to following Jesus or would like a back-to-basics refresher.
- Everyone in the church is in one of four Family Groups, mixtures of kids and adults who meet for social activities throughout the year and help out in practical ways in tricky times. If someone is sick, for instance, it’s people in their Family Group who will bring over meals, drive them around or babysit.
- Get Real is for all young people from year 7 up, their friends, families and mentors, and the format changes each year according to what demographic blips and bulges we have. In 2010 Get Real will meet on Sunday nights, three times a term, for a mixture of social events with young people and their mentors and nights for exploring God-stuff.
- We are planning to run a Relationships Course in Spotswood this year, in conjunction with our friends from Northpoint Church. At this stage, this is planned for Term 2, with more details to come.
- We are wondering about a couple of other groups, so let us know if you have something you’d be interested in getting together with others to do. At the moment, the drawing board contains rough wonderings about a craft-and-God group and a golf-and-God group. If you’re interested, please let me know!
