A Tale of Two Texts: Jesus Has a Dream

February 25th, 2010 by Thalia Kehoe Rowden

While we’re all unplugging from screen-based entertainment this Lent, we have a great opportunity to plug into the life of Jesus, particularly in the biographies of him we have in the Gospels.

Last Lent we spent most of our time in Luke’s Gospel, looking at Jesus used instances of hospitality to transform people and relationships.  This Lent we’re looking at Jesus’ famous ‘Sermon on the Mount’ (lots of talking on a hill, you might say), found in Matthew chapters 5-7.

It’s Jesus’ ‘I Have a Dream’ speech, really.  Just like Martin Luther King Jr did in Washington DC, Jesus is imagining a new, different way of living and calling it into being by sharing his imaginings with the crowd.  This is how life could be! he says.  And this is how you can make it so!

On Sunday we spent time unpacking the ‘Beatitudes’, Jesus’ announcement of what kinds of people and behaviour attract God’s blessing, in this new world he describes.  Check out Matthew 5:1-12 and listen to what I had to say about it on our sermon page.

This coming Sunday (28 February), we’re looking at some details about this new way of life Jesus is inspiring us to aspire to.  Have a look at four small verses, Matthew 5:13-16.  Give some thought to what you think Jesus is getting at, and come along on Sunday as we work together on the passage.  The big clue is that we need to – and I often quote Paul Windsor on this – go ‘over and back’.  What do I mean?  See you on Sunday!
